The Land of Smiles
One of Africa’s smallest countries, Malawi nevertheless has much to offer when it comes to exploration and adventure. There are mountains to climb, grasslands and forests to explore and endless water activities on Africa’s third largest lake, the beautiful Lake Malawi. Malawi’s wildlife is diverse and unlike wildlife parks in other African countries, the parks here have an exclusive feel to them with a limited number of lodges having been built in each. Majete Wildlife Reserve has yet to be discovered by popular tourism making it the perfect destination for exciting safaris.
Highlights: Lake Malawi, Liwonde National Park, Majete National Park, Cape Maclear, Mulanji Massif, Nyika Plateau, Zomba Plateau, Domwe Island, Mumbo Island Flying time from UK/Europe: Approx. 14 hours to Lilongwe Time Zone: GMT + 2 hours Languages: English, Chichewa Visas: NOT required by citizens of most Commonwealth countries, the USA, Japan, UK and most European Union countries and certain other countries
Malawi is a fantastic place for volunteer travellers wanting to contribute something to the communities they visit in Africa. Opportunities range from working with children, animals and wildlife to conservation and community outreach projects. We were asked by a brother and sister to ‘find them something worthwhile to do’ while they were spending a week in Malawi as part of a longer African tour. This is what we did for them…
